What to Look for in a Barcode Scanner
Durability
Consider the environment your barcode scanner will be in. Will it be in extreme temperatures? Are you going to be carrying it around? To make sure your barcode scanner is durable, check and see if it is shockproof, made of tough materials, and if it has been drop tested. These details will tell you if it can survive accidental drops and other damage.
Wireless Capability
Barcode scanners can either be wired and/or wireless. Wireless barcode scanners are great if you're on the go and are not able to scan items at your desk. If you decide that a wireless scanner is right for you, make sure the range will cover your space.
Storage of Barcodes
If you have a wireless barcode scanner, you'll want to make sure that it has an adequate amount of storage to save your barcodes if it is unable to upload your scans to your computer. Depending on the barcode scanner's internal memory, they can usually save anywhere between 5,000 to 200,000 scans. If your storage is full, you can plug the barcode scanner into your computer and upload them.
Scans per Second
The scans per second of a barcode refer to how fast the scanner will scan and decode your data. Most barcode scanners can scan between 100 and 200 scans per second. However, you can find barcode scanners that scan much more, like 600 scans per second.

Frequently Asked Questions
It is usual to be about 25 characters for 1D barcode and about 2000 for 2D one. Of course the more characters you encode the bigger is barcode. 1D barcode could became impractically wide if it is more than 15 characters encoded.
A 1D or linear barcode is a combination of vertical bars. For some of them you can encode only numbers for other you can encode letters also. Most of barcode scanners can read them scanning just a line. 2D barcode encodes information in two dimensions and therefore can keep a way more information in it. And it is usually smaller than 1D one. More complex scanner is required to read this type of barcodes.
It is because the emitted laser does not reflect diffusely from such barcodes. Specular reflections tend to occur when laser light shines on barcodes with glossy surfaces. Because diffuse reflections hardly occur in this situation, it is difficult to read such barcodes.

Barcode Scanner : The Ultimate Guide
A barcode scanner is a device that reads barcodes. Typical barcode scanners include laser barcode scanners and CCD barcode readers. Laser barcode scanners emit a laser beam on an oscillating mirror to scan the barcode. The narrow and wide bars, as well as the spaces, are detected and decoded. CCD barcode readers emit light onto the barcode and generate an image from the diffused reflection using the CCD. The image is decoded and output as information.
A 2D code reader extracts a 2D code from the captured image and decodes it. The captured grayscale image is binarized. A code is extracted and decoded to output information. Codes may not be readable depending on the lighting/camera conditions or settings, as well as glossy surfaces or the marking condition on the target. For inline installations, lighting-integrated type barcode scanners that can automatically adjust the image capturing conditions are effective.
Handheld barcode scanners are designed to allow operators to hold them in their hands to scan codes. Wireless models with fast, stable scanning performance are effective for improving work efficiency.

Types of Barcode Scanners
1. Laser
This is the most well-known scanner type. It uses a red diode laser to read the reflectance of the black and white spaces in a barcode. Laser scanners are only able to read standard linear (1D) barcodes but are also the most cost-effective option. Standard laser scanners can read from a few inches to a foot or two away depending on the size of the barcode.
2. CCD
Also called LED scanners. These use hundreds of tiny LED lights that shoot directly at the barcode. These types of scanners are very popular in POS or Point of Sale Applications. CCD Scanners need to be 3cms to 10 cms away from the barcode, otherwise, it will not work. It cannot read any barcode that is longer than the scanner monitor.
3. 2D barcode scanner
these types of barcode scanners also have the capability to scan 1D barcode,2D barcodes, QR codes
4. Bluetooth barcode scanner
these are wireless scanners that rely on Bluetooth technology. They give you the freedom to scan data anywhere at any time without being restricted by cable connections.
5. Fixed barcode scanner
these scanners are permanently mounted on a piece of equipment or on a surface. The items with barcodes are scanned past the monitor
Advantages of Barcode Scanners
Most of us are familiar with the basic gun-style and in-counter scanners from retail and grocery stores. There are 4 main form factors for scanners, and each has advantages depending on your application and how you’ll use the scanner.

Handheld
These are by far the most common form that scanners come in and are very easy to operate. Simply aim the scanner at the barcode and pull the trigger. Most models, like the Minjie MJ2806, will also offer a stand for hands-free operation. Handheld scanners are also available in a cordless form to avoid cable clutter and increase your mobility.
Desktop
Desktop scanners, like the Minjie MJ3880, are designed to sit on a counter-top and don’t need to be picked up or held. These scanners are made for hands-free scanning and will not require triggering to read. Likewise, instead of a single aimer like handheld scanners, presentation scanners have wide reading areas to reduce the need for aiming. You’ll find these types of scanners at retail check-outs since it is easy to scan many items quickly. Just present the barcode in front of the scanner and it will read it automatically.
Wearable
Any time two hands are required to function in the workplace, wearable scanners are the best solution to allow workers to use both hands to pick faster and expand productivity dramatically, while reducing errors and repetitive motions. MINJCODE’s wearable bar code scanners provide outstanding performance, leading to higher flexibility and uninterrupted workflows.
Fixed mount
A fixed scanner is a bit more specialized compared to the other types since it is really meant to be integrated with a larger automated system. These scanners are made to be mounted on a conveyor line or in a kiosk and do not have a typical trigger or button to scan. Often, these scanners will always be on or get triggered by external sensors or controllers.

1.Connectivity--wired & wireless
1.1 Every bar code scanner has to communicate with a PC to transmit the barcode information into the software that you are using. Historically, there were only wired barcode scanners that connected directly to the PC through a cable. These are still the most common scanner type and normally interface with a PC through a USB connection. Serial (RS232), PS/2, and proprietary terminal connections are also available for many models. Wired scanners are easy to get up and running and will be your least expensive option.
1.2 Cordless scanners have become more common today as their costs have become much more affordable. These handheld barcode scanners function the same way a wired scanner works except that the scanner communicates to a base station wirelessly. This base station is then connected to your PC through a cable. Your PC does not need to have any wireless support since the cradle and scanner handle all of this. Just plug in the cradle, pair the scanner to the base, and you are ready to start scanning. It is very easy to replace a wired scanner with a cordless one since it has no effect on your PC or software. Wireless barcode scanners can provide greater mobility and freedom from cable clutter in any application.
2.Ruggedness
Regardless of the environment that you’ll be using your scanner in, ruggedness is always something to consider. The environment is a big factor, though you should also consider how the scanner will be used. You may be in a standard environment but if the scanners are mistreated, a more rugged option will help save time and money down the road.
How to Choose the Right Type of Barcode Scanner?
Identify Your Requirements
The first and foremost step to find the right barcode reader is to determine your budget and identify your needs. It helps to ask the following questions:
1.Where will the scanner be used?
2.How will the scanner be utilized?
3.How frequently will the reader be used?
4.What types of barcodes will you be reading?
5.Will you need handheld scanners or deaktop scanner?
Answering these questions will help you narrow down the options and streamline the process of buying scanners.
Features Of Barcode Scanner Module
1. Mini size, small and light.
2. Integrated design of image acquisition and decoding, which can meet the application requirements in narrow space.
3. Adopt new "overscan" decoding technology.
4. Fully read all mainstream one-dimensional codes and two-dimensional codes.
5. High performance and low consumption.
What Is A Fixed Barcode Scanner Module Used For?
It can be integrated into code scanner, self-service terminal, medical equipment, robot, PDA barcode scanner, ticket checking machine and other instruments, and applied to hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, pharmacies, supermarkets, warehouses and other scenes.
Barcode scanners can be found in virtually every industry capturing data quickly, reliably and without error. From the warehouse to the manufacturing floor, retail checkout, and hospital bed, barcode scanners are critical tools that have transformed data capture processes to make them more efficient and error-free.

2. Plug the USB scanner into a different port on the hardware hub
3. Please refer to the instruction manual in the USB scanner package.
If you’re having issues with your USB scanner and aren’t receiving any error messages, you’ll want to try restoring the factory settings.
Hardware Needed for Barcode Scanners in Manufacturing
You will need hardware and infrastructure to support Barcoding in Manufacturing. This starts with good Wi-Fi. To provide the most flexible approach to operators moving about the facility working with materials, a solid Wi-Fi network is essential. It will improve the reliability of the scanning and inventory management operation into all parts of the facility. Start with a wireless survey and invest in good equipment; scrimping in here will cost you later.
You will also need good barcode printers. Focus on three things: Clean prints, long lasting ink, and good adhesive properties. Any problems in these areas will compound later and make product identification and scanning difficult. Good barcode printers include thermal printers available from Minjie. These printers are industrial strength and pay for themselves in the long run. You may also consider mobile printers, like those worn on a belt. Two aspects to look for in better printers support for printing in multiple languages, to reduce support costs and improve long term uptime.
And finally, you will need good scanning devices. These may include handheld devices from Minjie, and others.Like a fixed station scanner, like what you may see at a grocery store self-checkout, to quickly scan smaller items through a process.
IP Rating
An IP Rating is used to define levels of sealing effectiveness of the barcode scanner against intrusion from foreign bodies (tools, dirt etc) and moisture. The numbers that follow the "IP" each have a specific meaning. The first indicates the degree of protection from moving parts, as well as the protection of circuitry from foreign bodies. The second defines the protection level that the scanner casing provides from various forms of moisture (drips, sprays, submersion etc). The below should help make some more sense of it:
First Digit (intrusion protection)
0. No special protection
1. Protection from a large part of the body such as a hand (but no protection from deliberate access); from solid objects greater than 50mm in diameter.
2. Protection against fingers or other object not greater than 80mm in length and 12mm in diameter.
3. Protection from entry by tools, wires etc, with a diameter of 2.5 mm or more.
4. Protection against solid bodies larger than 1mm (eg fine tools/small etc).
5. Protected against dust that may harm equipment.
6. Totally dust tight.
Second Digit (moisture protection)
0. No protection.
1. Protection against condensation.
2. Protection against water droplets deflected up to 15° from vertical
3. Protected against spray up to 60° from vertical.
4. Protected against water spray from all directions.
5. Protection against low pressure water jets (all directions)
6. Protection against string water jets and waves.
7. Protected against temporary immersion.
8. Protected against prolonged effects of immersion under pressure.
